Maija VanRavenswaay, LMSW
Licensed Psychotherapist
Maija VanRavenswaay, Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), obtained her graduate degree in social work from Hunter College and her undergraduate degree in psychology from Barnard College.
As a therapist, Maija is heavily informed by psychodynamic and psychoanalytic approaches. She believes in providing ample space to explore childhood experiences and the unconscious in addition to learning practical coping skills. In addition to psychodynamic approaches, Maija utilizes Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, narrative therapy, and play therapy approaches when more appropriate for the needs of the individual. Maija specializes in attachment, trauma, and shame and has experience providing support for diverse challenges including everyday stressors, abuse in childhood or adulthood, mood disorders, anxiety, body image, parenting, and dating/relationships. Maija has worked with a broad range of ages, cultural backgrounds, and identities, including the LGBTQ+ community, and is firmly committed to intersectional fights for social justice.
Maija approaches therapy from a holistic, person-centered, strengths-based, and trauma-informed perspective. The client is maintained as the expert on their own experience and the therapist as a supportive collaborator in the healing process. Maija believes that holding a non-judgemental, affirming, and safe space is her primary job as a therapist and key to facilitating growth and healing. Whether your goals are related to managing particular challenges or you are simply seeking personal insight and growth, Maija looks forward to supporting you as you begin or continue your journey.
