Kalman Khodik, Psy.D

Founder, Clinical Executive Director & Senior Supervisor

About

Dr. Kalman Khodik is a licensed psychologist in New York and New Jersey and the Founder and Clinical Director of both Avita Psychological Care in New York and Avita Integrative Care in Teaneck, New Jersey. He created Avita to be more than a therapy practice—to be a thoughtfully designed environment where people and clinicians alike can grow, heal, and reconnect with what feels most real and alive inside them.

Approach

Dr. Khodik’s clinical work is grounded in depth psychology and shaped by the ideas of Karen Horney, who understood that emotional suffering often develops when people must adapt, perform, or suppress parts of themselves in order to feel safe in relationships. Many of the clients who come to Avita appear capable on the outside yet feel chronically anxious, self-critical, disconnected, or emotionally overextended on the inside. Over time, they may have learned to be endlessly strong, endlessly accommodating, or fiercely self-reliant—strategies that once helped them survive, but now leave them feeling depleted or stuck.

In therapy, Dr. Khodik helps clients identify these deeply ingrained patterns and gently shift from a “role-self” built around protection and expectation toward a more grounded, authentic sense of who they actually are. His work focuses on building emotional safety, increasing self-awareness, and supporting the nervous system so that change happens through coherence rather than pressure. Clients often describe the work as both emotionally meaningful and quietly transformative—less about forcing insight and more about restoring a sense of inner stability, clarity, and self-trust.

Education and training

Dr. Khodik earned his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Widener University, where his doctoral research examined heart rate variability, biofeedback and emotional self-regulation in addiction recovery. He also holds a Master’s degree from Teachers College, Columbia University, in Organizational Psychology, and brings a unique background in corporate consulting and project management from his earlier career working with Fortune 500 organizations such as Credit Suisse, the World Bank, and McKinsey & Company. This blend of psychological depth and systems thinking allows him to work with individuals who live in high-pressure environments and want therapy that is both emotionally attuned and thoughtfully structured.

A formative part of Dr. Khodik’s professional development took place at the Karen Horney Clinic in New York City, where he provided psychodynamic psychotherapy to adults struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, addictions, psychosomatic conditions, and chronic stress. There, he learned to listen beneath symptoms—to the fears, longings, and relational patterns that shape how people live and relate. This perspective continues to guide both his clinical work and the culture he has built at Avita.

Leadership and Clinical Direction

As Founder and Clinical Director, Dr. Khodik leads the vision, clinical standards, and integrative service development across both Avita practices. He is deeply involved in shaping Avita as a high-touch, boutique environment—one that prioritizes relational depth, clinician excellence, and whole-person care over volume, speed, or one-size-fits-all treatment. His goal is to create a setting where clients feel genuinely seen and supported, and where clinicians are given the time, mentorship, and professional respect needed to do their best work.

Dr. Khodik also serves as Senior Supervisor, providing ongoing individual and group supervision to Avita’s clinical team. He is known for a supervision style that is both supportive and rigorous—helping clinicians think deeply about their clients, their own reactions, and the emotional systems unfolding in the therapy room. He is especially committed to training therapists to work with attachment trauma, relational patterns, and nervous-system regulation in a way that is ethically grounded, culturally sensitive, and clinically effective.

At Avita Integrative Care, Dr. Khodik leads the development of mind–body and biofeedback-informed services, bringing together psychotherapy, physiological self-regulation, and trauma-informed care into a coherent model of healing. This work reflects his belief that emotional change is not just something we think about, but something we experience and embody.

Clinical Focus

Dr. Khodik works with adults from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds and is fluent in both English and Russian. He is especially drawn to working with people who feel caught between who they are and who they have had to be—those navigating high expectations, relationship struggles, identity conflicts, or the quiet exhaustion that comes from living too long in survival mode.

At its heart, Dr. Khodik’s work is about helping people come back to themselves. Not by becoming someone new, but by rediscovering the parts of themselves that were always there—waiting for the safety, understanding, and support needed to emerge.
